› eZ systems Opposes Software Patents

My dear colleague Zak Greant has written a nice article, where he leaves no doubt about what eZ systems thinks about software patents: well, we simply think they stink Zak of course formulates this in a more eloquent way and he also provides some reasons why we don’t like them. Software patents might be [...]

› Justin Silverton's Blog: Converting PHP Scripts to Windows Apps

Justin Silverton has a very simple post on his blog today about the conversion of a PHP application over to a Windows-native application.

I came across this application the other day that will allow you to convert php scripts to native windows applications. The application is called WinBinder and it is available Here

He lists out some of their key benefits ot making the switch and shows a very simple example of creating a "Hello World" window with the scripts.

› HP LaserJet 1320

My OKIPAGE 14i died last week.

Today I replaced it with an HP LaserJet 1320. I am more than content with its quality, speed, and happy to finally have a printer with a duplex unit.

› PHPit.net: Using the CURL Library on PHP

Yet another fine tutorial has been posted over on PHPit.net today, this time dealing with the use of the cURL library in PHP.

Sooner or later you're bound to run across a certain problem in your script: how to retrieve content from other websites. There are several methods for this, and the simplest one is probably to use the fopen() function (if it's enabled), but there aren't really a lot of options you can set when using the fopen function. What if you're building a web spider, and want to have a custom user agent? That isn't really possible with fopen, nor is it possible to define the request method (GET or POST).

That's where the CURL library comes in. This library, usually included with PHP, allows you to retrieve other pages, and also makes it possible to define dozens of different options.

This article doesn't look to be comprehensive on the topic, but does provide a great introduction to the hows and whys of using cURL in PHP. There's no installation procedures here, so you'll need to already have it installed, but other than that, you should have a great grasp on things by the time you're through.

› Developer.com: Authentication in Applications

While not directly PHP related, Developer.com has an interesting article covering the use of authentication in your applications.

Authentication is the act of establishing identity via the presentation of information that allows the verifier to know the presenter is who or what it claims. This identity could be any number of things, including people, systems, applications, messages.

Why would one want to verify an identity in the first place? Hopefully, most people reading this recognize that as sarcastic humor. This article presents different types of authentication and ways of adding it to your applications.

They discuss a range of authentication types - all the way from simple authentication out to cryptographic and multi-factor authentication. They wrap it up with a look at how you can choose the appropriate authentication methods for your applications as well.

I've seen several sites moving more and more to the next step up from the basic level of authentication up to even just the multi-factor. The more levels of security you can put on your application the better, especially if you're housing any kind of personal data about your users.

› phpDay in italy

I was invited to join the phpDay in Bari, Italy, this Mai. Since I think that Bari in May must be beautiful, I accepted to go there from May 19th until May 21st. I'm pretty much looking forward to this event, since it means to get to know a lot of new people. If you are located in Italy and are interested on PHP, it would be a pleasure, if you join my talk about eZ components there.
