› PHPUnit Support in PHPEclipse

Steven Balthazor sent me a first version of his PHPUnit integration for PHPEclipse today.

The PHPUnit part of this (a TestListener that communicates via a socket with Eclipse) has been committed to CVS. Stephen has made his plugin code available here.

› Pierre's Blog: phpgd.com

In this post on his blog, Pierre points out a GD-related site that he's come across with articles, tutorials, and various information about graphics manipulation in PHP.

PHPGD.com is a resource for anyone interested in creating graphics and graphics applications using the programming language PHP with the GD or GD2 image library. PHP's GD library is based upon the original GD library by Thomas Boutell.

They already have several articles posted, including one covering black and white conversation and working with TrueType fonts in your images. There's only a few scripts posted so far, but there are tons of resources they can pull those in from. The "Discussion" area for the site points over to the DevNetwork forums, part of the same community board we share.

› IBM developerWorks: Use PHP to build a search engine optimization app

The IBM developerWorks site has posted part one of a new series - using PHp o build a search engine optimization application.

PHP, a dynamic Web-based programming language, takes a variety of input formats and uses a built-in SOAP client to obtain information from the Web. PHP, combined with applications using search engine optimization (SEO), is a powerful tool for obtaining information from major search engines, allowing this information to guide a webmaster's online marketing and SEO strategies. Find out how to take advantage of these strategies by building the back end of an application to monitor and track your client's SEO efforts.

The application takes in CSV files that contain keyword and domain combinations. The positions on each of the search engines is generated from these. You'll need a bit of prior PHP knowledge to work through it and you'll need a place where a web server, PHP, a database, and Java are installed.

› Chris Shiflett's Blog: ZF Tutorial Update

Chris Shiflett has made an update to the Zend Framework tutorial (that he created for php|architect) to make it function better with the changes made in preview release 0.1.2.

I just updated my Zend Framework Tutorial. It now works with version 0.1.2 of the framework. I also fixed a few minor bugs and improved my explanation of several topics, particularly the front controller.

This tutorial barely scratches the surface, so be sure to check out the other resources already available. I'm sure there are other resources I've missed (some I just can't find at the moment), so please let me know if you've written some notes of your own, and I'll update this entry.

He also notes that the mailing list for the framework has become quite active, especially as people discover bugs in the system.

› Holmenkollen

Every year there is a ski jumping event in Oslo, at the Holmenkollen venue. As I'm turning more and more Norwegian now (already been here for almost two years now) I could not let this slip. So together with some folks we drove to Oslo and walked up the hill to the venue. It's pretty impressive to see how high this hill they jump off actually is. Much more impressive then on TV.

Normally Holmenkollen is always very foggy, but this year there was excellent weather: "warm" and sunny. We were a bit early so had to wait a bit but atleast there were some performances to get the audience going. Amazingly that seemed to work better than I expected.

There were 50 participants and they started in the order they were ranked in FIS' World Championship. After the first round the best 30 continue to the second heat where the best one from the first heat is the last man to jump. Adam Malysz won which didn't please the Norwegians too much (best Norwegian was 10th). There were a lot of Poles at the event though, and they were ofcourse quite happy.

For more photos see my gallery.
