› WebReference.com: How to Interact with Web Forms (Part 1)

On WebReference.com today, there's this new tutorial with an introduction to getting PHP to interact with web forms.

HTML forms are one of the key ingredients of any dynamic website because they can enable the users of a site to interact with it. Otherwise, websites are more or less static:They may be driven by a database and, therefore, regularly changing, but they look the same for each and every visitor. HTML forms can change that; therefore, using data from forms from within PHP is very important.

They give examples of how to send data back to a script from a form, reading that data (using superglobals), and what data will be returned from each form element type. From there, they get into specifics like dealing with magic quotes and saving the form data into a cookie...

› Tobias Schlitt's Blog: eZ components workshop in Dortmund - Germany

In this new post on his blog today, Tobias Schlitt shares information about a workshop for those interested in developing with the eZ component system.

As Derick already wrote, we release the first RC of our new product eZ components yesterday.

Now it's time to get you finally involved. Therefore, I will give a 2 day workshop on the eZ components on March 6th-7th (6 hrs per day) in our office in Dortmund. The training will give you an overview on the architecture of the eZ components and will dig into most of the exciting components in depth by showing practical examples. You will see how you can perform everyday development tasks very efficient and will learn how to use the neat interface we thought out.

Some of the topics that will be included in the workshop include database abstraction, caching, image manipulation, file handling, and more...

› eZ components workshop in Dortmund - Germany

As Derick already wrote, we release the first RC of our new product eZ components yesterday. Beside the unification of the API, we enhanced several components with additional features and refactored smaller parts here and there since Beta2. I feel highly satisfied about how our work evolved in the past 6 month.

  • Database abstraction
  • Caching
  • Image manipulation
  • File handling
  • Email

and much more...

I can highly recommend this workshop to everyone involved with PHP based development to get an overview on what we did in the past half year and to see how your development can benefit from this. After the workshop you will be able to directly enter highly efficient development using the eZ components.

For more information refer to our announcement of the workshop

› Abject "sponsored link" practice on PHPFreaks (update)

Update (Jan 17th 2005, 13:45):

Many people replied to my article, so I feel I should post an update. Thanks for everyone who stated his opinion so far.

Today I saw that phpfreaks.com actually changed the links on the word PHP to point to their start page and now link the word hosting to their webspace provider. At least, this does not harm my PHP evangelism feelings that much anymore. Anyway, the difference between ad and content is still not clear at all. Pretty many people (compared to the usual comment traffic on my blog) already claimed their support against this kind of ads here.

Most funnily phpfreaks.com even aggregated this article through an indirection of phpdeveloper.org. While I like getting aggregated on sites like phpdeveloper.org, planet-php.net and so on quite much, I strongly discourage that my content is reused by this phpfreaks page. Sorry guys, I do not permit you any longer to use my words for your advertisements.

Do you have an opinion on this? Please leave a comment here!

Original (Jan 12th 2005, 19:06):

As Vidyut pointed out, phpfreaks.com seems to automatically create a link everywhere on their website, where the word "PHP" appears. They do this even in user comments. Apparently this seems to be a nice service, if the link would direct you to php.net (or maybe some explaination page or something). But instead they link to some hosting provider which supports PHP (what also well known as a "sponsored link").

I have to admit that this is one of the largest brazennesses I every saw. Beside that, it's absolutely frowned upon in journalism circles (even the famous German "Bild-Zeitung" does not do advertisment in such a abject way, also they are wellknown for borderlining adverts) and in many states even completly illegal.

You should really feel ashame, you strange PHPFreaks!

› DevShed: Building a PHP 5 Form Processor - Coding the Form Generator Module

DevShed has a new tutorial today (the first of three in the series) that talks about the creation of a PHP 5 Form Processor.

Most developers must deal with the job of developing robust data validation for forms on a regular basis. Nobody wants to write the same code over and over, so this article (the first of three in a series) will help you develop an extensible and reusable form validation package. By the end of the article, you will have all the relevant classes that integrate the generator module of the PHP form processor.

They start off showing you how to create the forms (using reusable elements), complete with code. Moving on, they look at client-side validation with some help from a bit of Javascript. They wrap this part of the series up with a look at how to combine them to create an actual form with some validating built-in...

› Codewalkers.com: New Tutorial - Coding "Best Practices" - or at least "Better Practices"

Codewalkers.com has added a new tutorial today from Ligaya Turmelle that looks a "best practices" when working with PHP.

Best Practices-- What the heck does that mean? One definition returned by Google reads "processes and activities that have been shown in practice to be the most effective." What does that mean to you? These are things that work so use them! And while I will be discussing PHP specifically, these can be used in ANY programming language.

These simple guidelines will help make your scripts easier to read and understand (to you and the next guy), have fewer bugs and save you time. I guess the better question is why AREN'T you already using them?

They cover several highlight points, including "think before you code", "reinventing the wheel", and discussions of general things like Coding Style and Security...

› Nexen.net: Museum Management with PHP

Via this post on Nexen.net today, they point out this interesting bit of PHP software - myColex.

myColex is a complete museum management and collection documentation system with longterm archiving capabilities based on Apache/PHP and mySQL. Manage your object inventories, events, pictures, addresses e.g. with your browser.

It hasn't been updated in a while (06.2004), but it's an interesting niche market for a PHP application, and it really goes a long way to show the flexibility the language has...
