› SitePoint PHP Blog: J4P5 - Javascript For PHP5

On the SitePoint PHP Blog today, there's a new post from Harry Fuecks talking about J4P5, a native PHP5 Javascript interpreter.

I kid you not. In fact this looks like a pretty serious attempt. You'll need to download and run yourself. There's grammar rules for Javascript in there and a Javascript runtime written in PHP. It passes the "it works" test

› Chris Shiflett's Blog: Technical Vocabulary and Grammar

It's not strictly PHP related, but Chris Shiflett has posted this new item on his blog today with a look at some technical vocabulary and grammar.

I sometimes wonder why people feel so compelled to use technical terms when talking about computers, even when they don't know what the terms mean. In my experience, those who know the least about a particular topic use the most complicated vocabulary when discussing it. I considered compiling a list of the popular ones, but since I'm lazy and have a blog, I decided to blog about it instead. Feel free to add to the list.

He mentions the incorrect use of the term "computer" when referring to hardware (overgeneralization), the confusion over very similar technical words (i.e. Orientated and Oriented, Depreciated and Deprecated), the pluralization of company names, and various other issues. Be sure to check out the comments for even more...

› BoingBoing gets in a knot over the ping attribute

Boing Boing makes the following interesting statement about some work that was just done in FireFox:
A new proposed feautre in Firefox/Mozilla automates a common web-linking technique in a way that raises grave concerns about user-privacy. (Full article here.)
Some important things to know about this situation are:
  1. Websites already do this in a way that users have no control - most users may easily be tracked by sites they are visiting without their consent or any way to opt out of the tracking
  2. The ping attribute feature that is being added to Firefox can be disabled by users.

While adding the ping attribute will not make the first issue go away, it will allow websites who wish to track users be able to do so in an way that allows users to opt out. This is a vast improvement over the current situation. Of course, there are other issues involved, but don't get too bent out of shape before doing your research. ;)

Interestingly, some of the advertising on BoingBoing makes use of tracking features that ping would replace.

Full disclosure: I work for the Mozilla Foundation.

› Derick Rethans' Blog: New Planet Discovered

Derick Rethans has a quick new post today about the "discovery" of a new Planet site focused around the world of eZ Publish.

No, this is not something that New Horizons found as that mission hasn't been launched yet. It's Planet eZ publish, an aggregation of blogs about eZ publish, similar to Planet PHP that aggregates blogs about PHP.

Some of the blogs already included in the list are from people like: Derick himself, Tobias Schlitt, Kristof Coomans, and Paul Borgermans. The RSS feed for the site can be found here...

› Planet eZ publish

I ragazzi di eZ hanno lanciato un aggregatore di blog su eZ publish. Si chiama Planet eZ publish e mi pare aperto a contributi esterni. Per ora ci scrivono gli sviluppatori di sistema eZ, il che è già una gran cosa.

› Planet eZ publish is Alive

A new star is born: Planet eZ publish is now part of the blogosphere. There you will find aggregated blog entries of community and eZ systems crew members, writing about eZ-related topics. The aggregator is actually based on eZ publish and created by my nice colleague Lukasz Serwatka.
