› RSS on the fly/RSS for tagged objects

After the suggestion by Xavier, this wasn't all that hard. Witness RSS Streams for the Blog, comments of each entry and also one for each category of blog entries. All created on the fly. Now if only I could figure out how to render timestamps conforming to RFC822 easily. Will probably have to write my own template operator or something...

› Khalid Hanif's Blog: Email Header Injection in PHP

In a simple example of something that could cause a lot of problems in your PHP script (and server's) life, this new post sheds some light on email header injection in PHP.

It has become apparent that spammers are getting even more smarter than we take them for. Rather than abuse open relays, which are almost non-existent, these scum-of-the-earth 'traders' are now abusing contact forms.

However, the problem isn't necessarily that they are attempting to use the contact forms. The problem that exists is that the average coder with little or no understanding of security issues can create a contact form for their website which can act as an open invitation to spammers.

In Fantastico De Luxe.

Do you want to use PHP-based programs on a hosted Web server, but you don't want to go through the hassle of setting up MySQL, PHP, and Apache so that they're in perfect alignment to run your blog, CMS (content management system), or photo gallery? If that's you, you need to find a Web host that uses Netenberg's Fantastico De Luxe.

If it's a PHP-based, open-source Web application, chances are Fantastico can install it for you.

He notes that many web services offer the software, but quite a few of them are older versions and won't install the latest PHP apps very well. His "adventures" with an installation of Drupal was what led him to dicsover this product - and, in his words, "it was fantastic".

› Tagged and on the fly RSS

I was wondering about the RSS facilities in eZ for a while now. While there are all nice and dandy for simple things, they fall short for more complicated things (like say providing RSS streams for the comments of a blog posting without creating the stream by hand) or, which is my personal thing as my blog categories are based upon object relation, the fact that a new object is related to some other object (which, in it's very essence, is what tagging is all about). So one of these days, I want to address this two things and add RSS export that will allow on the fly creation of RSS streams (think rss/$parentnodeid and the module will export all child objects of parentnode) and the above mentioned tagging features. I'm not yet quite sure just how I'm gonna do it but it's not like that ever stopped anyone ;)

› $5,701,201 worth of eZ publish code?

I just ran David Wheeler's SLOCCount tool on a copy of eZ publish 3.7.3. David describes SLOCCount as:

a set of tools for counting physical Source Lines of Code (SLOC) in a large number of languages of a potentially large set of programs.

The tool generated a bunch of interesting stats, including an estimated cost to develop the eZ publish codebase: $5,701,201 USD.

Read on for more details.
