› php|architect: Zend Framework - A Practical Tutorial

On php|architect's site, in wake of the Zend Framework preview release previously, they've posted a step-by-step tutorial on how to get it installed, work it it, and ultimately create a simple news application.

The Zend Framework has been unveiled! Although it is still in the early stages of development, this tutorial highlights some of the best of what's available now and guides you through the process of building a simple application.

Zend has chosen to release the framework and involve the community early. In the same spirit, this tutorial is written to showcase the framework as it exists today. Because this tutorial is published online, I'll update it as the framework evolves, so that it remains relevant as long as possible.

This isn't a tutorial for those that aren't into object oriented programming with PHP yet, as it relies heavily on knowledge or classes and how they work together. In the tutorial, they take you through everything - the install, the structure, and some more detail on what the packages are (Zend_Controller, Zend_View, and Zend_InputFilter). Once all of that knowledge is in place, they start the work on the news application, creating a script that uses a more MVC approach to interface with a SQLite database and allow users to enter news items and for an admin to approve them.

› Yes, there is professional support for Open Source CMSs!

I have in the past read several papers about the Open Source CMS market, where the authors argued that such products lack professional support, that you depend on a forum or mailinglist, blabla. This is plain wrong!

For example, the company I work for, eZ systems, is the creator of the Open Source CMS eZ publish. We provide all the services you need, as well as total product responsibility for our CMS in the realm of the eZ publish Network, which includes guranteed bug fixing.

Aleksander Farstad, the CEO of eZ systems has just published an article entitled Power of Enterprise Open Source where he takes a closer look at what it really means to provide an Open Source product, plus professional support.

The essence of his view is: "The power of Enterprise Open Source originates from the combination of freedom and responsibility." He further writes: "This gives both the users the freedom of choice and at the same time the backing of a responsible party providing a full set of guarantees and services."

So, you consultants out there, get it right from now on! Of course, some of you already know about this :)

› Davey Shafik's Blog: Zend Framework and Flickr

Davey Shafik has an interesting use for the recently released Zend Framework - an app that grabs 50 random images from Flickr and combines them.

As you most likely know, I have been working with Zend on the Zend Framework for a couple of months now. The bulk on my tasks there have been working on the Zend_Service* set of classes. This includes the Amazon, Flickr and Yahoo! APIs.

So, as I'm getting more and more into flickr (see http://flickr.com/dshafik for my photo stream) I have been exploring and I saw a very neat set of images which were composites of 50 random flickr images for a given tag.

Well, I liked this enough, I decided that I could do it on-the-fly using PHP, ImageMagick? and of course... the Zend Framework.

You can check out the actual application here, and for those that love getting the background story, the source is here.

› FrOSCon 2006 - Call for {Papers|Projects}

Free and Open Source Software Conference (FrOSCon)

If you want to submit a talk for FrOSCon in June, you will have to hurry: The deadline for the call for papers is approaching.

Talks can be submitted until March, 15th 2006. The organizers ask for talks about free software and open source. Expert knowledge on programming languages, free software on the desktop, security, administration and networks is in demand.
